Dave Says “Don’t Worry”

Let’s face it, everyone has a worry or two! Some can be non-trivial, while others are trivial. For some people, there is little difference. The emotional impact can feel just as severe, regardless of the issue’s extent.

I have just read a little book that explores the problem of worry in great depth. As the author notes at the top of the front cover, the book is “A Practical and Prayerful Guide.” The clue to navigating worry and anxiety lies in the word ‘prayer.’

Anyone who visits a Well-Being Show is likely to meet and talk to David Albans at his stand ‘Try Praying’. David and his friends truly enhance the events, and those who engage with them often discover peace and relief from their troubles. While there is no obligation to sit and discuss problems with them, you can enjoy the most interesting conversations. And yes! A central theme revolves around God and Jesus, along with various aspects of religious and spiritual beliefs. It should be made clear here: no one is attempting to convert or indoctrinate. David and his colleagues pay for their stand just like everyone else, and they attend the Well-Being Shows to assist those who wish to find respite or say a few words of prayer for a friend in need or facing difficulties. There are very few of us who haven’t prayed for help or guidance at some point in our lives; it is a normal aspect of life.

And so we arrive at David Albans’ intriguing little blue book. I’m a fan; it’s a delightful and exceptionally well-crafted book about understanding why we worry and how taking time to pray can help us discover the answers needed to alleviate our anguish. Whether one believes in God or not, prayer can help break the cycle of unhappiness.

Dave says, “Don’t worry”, and takes the reader on a pleasant journey. The first part of the text provides a clear explanation of why we worry and the reasons we cannot always let go of issues that seem to have no end. Page nine confirms this in the final paragraph, “Worry is Destructive”. As we read through the following pages, we become more enlightened about the many factors of worry. The chapter ‘Facts about Worry’ is exceptional, and for many people, it will be enough to sow the seeds of new beginnings in a troubled moment in time.

As you continue reading through the book, David explains the meaning and modern interpretations of the scriptures. Within these explanations, one can discover ways to focus on the lessons that help address one’s problems. Of course, prayer is central to the method, which is fine. As you read through the book, you will find short and practical prayers for specific situations.

Another aspect of importance is the numerous stories written by people who have successfully utilised the power of prayer and guidance to reflect on certain scriptures to navigate the dark times of life. And the stories are very insightful. Mary learned the power of patience and how to build a successful career from Isaiah 37:30, and no, I’m not going to copy the relevant words; have a look at the book and find out how the lesson helped build a successful and caring career. Reading the uplifting stories could be a help in itself!

David’s book is undoubtedly a handbook on prayer. It is straightforward to read and provides many people with methods to pray, while also elucidating why one might consider believing in the teachings of the scriptures. For some, faith in God is fundamental to prayer, and there is little doubt that this is central to the book’s premises. However, I am sure that anyone could benefit from reading this excellent little book.

This brief review cannot fully convey the depth and breadth of Dave Says Don’t Worry’s insights. One must read the book to grasp the whole message. And of course, you can meet David at some of the Well Being Shows. Not only can you visit the Try Praying stand, but you can also attend his fantastic talk presentations. If this is not enough, come and listen to David playing his guitar!
